I Choose You – Choosing Your Spouse Even When It’s Hard

2

“I choose you” are three very powerful words.  We choose our kids OVER and OVER all day long, but the idea behind “I choose you” can be pretty incredible when it comes to marriage.  Saying “I love you” is important but really meaning it and being intentional is what matters.

Think of your spouse.  Remember your first date, your first kiss, the first movie you saw together (okay, I don’t actually remember that), your engagement, your wedding day, your first home, your first vacation, the birth of your child/ren – so many moments of importance.  EVERY one of these moments was special and for the most part, happy!  Looking back on the happy moments of the past makes me think quite fondly of my husband.  It’s easy to smile thinking of our love.

On the other hand, we’ve also had plenty of memories that aren’t so happy.  A death in the family, moving away from family, job stress, money issues, infertility, buying/selling a house, general disagreements, child induced sleep deprivation, postpartum issues – I could go on and on.  Thinking of all these trying moments make me realize what was at the root of them all – us.  Us, and the fact that we made it through AND happily.

While I would rather simply relive the happy times, knowing that we can also make it through hard times makes us stronger together.  Here’s to vulnerability, being intentional with our spouses, and choosing them OVER and OVER.

Through the joyful moments and the challenging ones, I choose to say to my husband… I choose you by letting you know how much I love you every day.  I choose you by keeping our household running smoothly (for the most part) and pouring my love into our children.  I choose you by always kissing you goodbye, good night, and many times in between.  I choose you by not letting little annoyances get in the way of how much I truly love you.  I choose you by planning date nights, which sometimes may be nights in at home.  I choose you by spending as much time together as we can.  I choose you by always fighting for us.  I choose you not only because we are married but because my love for you goes much deeper.  You really are my person and the one I want to fill all of my days forever.

Now, go find “your person” and show him how much he means.  If you want some ideas of showing your love this holiday season (or really any time), check out this post!

  1. Love this sentiment! It’s so easy to get caught up in the day to day and take a spouse for granted. What a great reminder to choose each other every day!
