Dashing through the snow … again!

1

When you add up all the appetizers, turkey and trimmings, drinks and desserts, the average American could be packing in up to 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day. No wonder we feel stuffed!

If you are interested in pre-burning some of those Turkey Day calories, you are in luck. Brown County residents have a choice of two Thanksgiving morning road races this year. Festival Foods is once again sponsoring its annual Turkey Trot, with two- or five-mile distances that begin and end near Lambeau Field on Holmgren Way. (This is the final event in the Bellin Health Titletown Race Series.) Participants will get long-sleeved T-shirts, a coffee sample and pumpkin pie at the finish, and four-legged friends are invited to join the fun in the two-mile “Dog Jog.” Races benefit the YMCA and the Boys & Girls Club.

New this year is the De Pere Turkey Trot 5K run/walk, organized by All Community Events. The race along the Fox River Trail starts and finishes at Voyageur Park, and participants will get a two-toned hoodie, finisher’s medal and cinnamon roll. Their charity partner is Wisconsin Ovarian Cancer Alliance.

There’s a range of other holiday-themed races and distances to choose from – and all are for a good cause. But whether you’re looking to seriously pound the pavement or just take the kiddos for a festive stroll, there’s a race number with your name on it:

  • Nov. 11: “Ugly Sweater” Run, Manitowoc. Not only do the fastest runners get prizes in this 5K run/walk or 10K run, awards also go to those sporting the ugliest sweaters as well as the most creative team name. Registration ends Nov. 9 at 11:59 p.m. Event benefits the Autism Society of the Lakeshore.
  • Nov. 21: “Santa Scamper,” Appleton. This race precedes the annual Appleton Christmas Parade down College Avenue. It will begin at the corner of College Avenue and State Street; due to construction at the Fox Cities Expo Center and temporary closure of Jones Park, the race distance will be 0.8 miles this year, finishing at City Park. All ages are welcome, but please – no rollerblades or pets. Event benefits St. Joseph Food Program as registrants are asked to donate one nonperishable food item.
  • Nov. 26: Noodles & Co. “Noodleini” Half Marathon and 5K Run/Walk, De Pere. Burn off those crazy calories with this fun run through scenic neighborhoods out to Lost Dauphin Road and back. Race benefits the West De Pere High School band.
  • Dec. 2: “Jingle Bell Run,” Green Bay. Put on some reindeer antlers and go off dashing through the snowy streets around the UW-Green Bay campus. The 5K or one-mile run/walk includes hot cocoa and an ugly sweater/holiday costume contest, and it benefits the Arthritis Foundation.
  • Dec. 2: “Race for the Light,” Oshkosh. Participants who sign up to run the 15th annual 5K through the seasonally decorated Menominee Park will receive a set of jingle bells and a commemorative ornament. Event benefits Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services. Wear an ugly sweater and check out the awesome light displays.
  • Dec. 2: “Sleigh Bell” Run/Walk, Kiel. The 5K run and two-mile run/walk will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties and the Kiel High School cross country team. For younger kids, sign up for the 100-yard dash, the ¼-mile run or the free “reindeer games.”
