Summer Farmers Markets: The Shakedown

1

One of the best parts of summer is the availability of fresh, locally grown produce available at a variety of farmers markets. Supporting our local farmers and community is very important to the well-being of the local economy, and an added bonus of that is you get to form relationships with the people who are growing your family’s food. Not to mention, it is fresh!

There are several ways to obtain locally grown produce in the summer months. You can get produce every week from a farm through a CSA (community supported agriculture) program, or you can support local farmer’s markets. We will have another upcoming post about farms in the area that offer CSAs. For now, here is an overview of the many farmers markets available to us in the summer!

Tuesdays:

The Village of Howard market will be returning for a second year this year!  This year the market has been switched to Tuesdays and will run from 4:00-7:00 pm. The first week of the market is June 13th, and will continue until September 26th. This market offers a variety of everything: locally grown produce, meats, specialty goods, crafts and a variety of food vendors.

Festival Foods DePere will host a market at 1001 Main St. The market is from 7am – noon, begins July 11th, and will run every Tuesday until October 25th. It’s great that Festival is working hard to promote shopping local and supporting local farms!

The Village of Pulaski will host its annual farmers market from 4-7 pm on St. Augustine St. The final dates for their market have not been set, but typically starts near the end of June.

Wednesdays:

One of the biggest markets in the Fox Valley area that occurs on Wednesdays is the Farmers Market On Broadway. The market begins the first week of June, and runs from 3:00-8:00pm every Wednesday thru September. While there are plenty of local produce vendors, there are also many food vendors and beer and wine stands. There is also a weekly music feature. This is one market you can truly make an evening of, all while buying your produce. However, this market is very busy, so it is not easily navigated with a stroller.

Thursdays:

There are 5 markets that occur on Thursdays, and all are very family-friendly.

Allouez and Bellin Health Farmers’ Market will take place in the Bellin Allouez Parking Plaza 3:30-6:30 pm. The market runs from June 15th-October 5th. Be sure to put it on your list of markets to visit this summer/fall!

The Definitely De Pere market is located in the Seroogy’s Parking lot and runs from 3:00-7:00 pm. The market will start up June 15th and continue every Thursday until  September 28th. The De Pere market not only offers fresh produce, but also weekly events such as a kid’s market, education opportunities, or entertainment venues.

Market on Military runs from June 1st-October 26th every Thursday 3-7 pm. Located in Green Bay Plaza parking lot. Don’t miss out!

The Oneida Farmer’s Market is located at N7332 Water Circle Place in Oneida, and is every Thursday from noon until 6:00pm. The market will start on June 22nd, and continue every Thursday until October 5th. This market contains a variety of local goods, as well as handmade crafts.

The town of Gillett also offers a market on Thursdays, at the Downtown Gillett Square. The market runs every Thursday from 4:00-6:00 pm and will begin on June 1st. Fresh flowers, fresh produce, and local crafts give plenty of variety in this small town market!

Saturdays:

There are two fantastic options for Saturday Farmer’s markets, and it can truly be a weekend routine for your family.

The Downtown Green Bay farmers market is located on S. Washington St every Saturday from 7 am – noon. This year, the market will begin on May 27th and continue through October 28th, making it the longest running market in the Green Bay area. There are breakfast options, produce, crafts, fresh bread and more!

The downtown Appleton market is always a huge attraction. It boosts the most vendors of any market in the state besides that of the Madison Farmers Market. It is also a year-round market, occurring indoors November-May, and then outdoors June-October. The market has a great deal of variety, and plenty for the whole family to do, see, and buy. The market is from 8am – 12:30 pm and is located on College Avenue when it is outside.

Sundays:

Festival Foods Suamico hosts a farmers market as well! The market runs from 7am – noon every Sunday beginning July 16th.
