The Crystal River Inn – My Gilmore Girls B&B Experience

An overnight stay at Crystal River Inn was provided in exchange for this post. The commentary is 100% genuine.

Crystal River Inn Gilmore GirlsThe countdown is on! The Gilmore Girls will be back soon!  What a better way to celebrate than a trip to a Bed and Breakfast (B&B). My only previous experience with a B&B was eerily similar to the Cheshire Cat. (The B&B that Lorelai and Rory went to during the road trip they took after Lorelai canceled her wedding to Max).  It was covered in flowers, cats and strange guest books where you were to write stories about cats…

Anyway, I was not going to let my previous experiences be my only opinion on what the B&B experience should be. So my husband and I visited Crystal River Inn, a member of the Wisconsin Bed & Breakfast Association (WBBA). As such, the Crystal River Inn is licensed, inspected and insured, and they represent the best of the state’s B&B experience.  #SeekTheUnique is such a fitting hashtag for the WBBA to use.gazebo

We drove to the historical town of Rural, just outside of Waupaca, Wisconsin. This small town is nestled in wooded hills. There are not the little shops as in Stars Hollow but the neighborhood was made of beautiful 1800s homes.  All of them with views of the river running through their yards and over dams. The Crystal River Inn, a 1853 farmstead, is one of them.

Deb and Robert, who were wonderful hosts to us for our stay, greeted us at the door.  They gave us a tour of the home, history of the town and suggestions as to where to eat.  They also suggested a local event occurring in the area. (100 amazing carved pumpkins put on display to raise money and food for a local food bank)

The home and grounds reminded me of a homier version of the Gilmore Girl’s Independence Inn. Similarly, the decor was a fantastic mix between old and new. The 1850’s home had historic charm while being very well kept. The Crystal River flows by the home and many of the rooms overlook it. There is a huge picture window in the sitting area. The chairs by the window are the perfect place to enjoy your many cups of coffee while watching the river flow. An outdoor gazebo is the perfect spot to sit during beautiful summer days.

Not only was this asitting-area great place to stay but the food would make Sookie St. James proud.  Deb and Robert prepared all the food with fresh local ingredients.  Pumpkin cookies with an icing that I could have eaten by the bowlful were waiting for us as an evening snack. They served us a delicious raspberry yogurt with granola, acorn squash with cranberry sauce, egg frittata, and
whole wheat muffins (made in that home for 125 years) with homemade jams for breakfast.

The Crystal River Inn may not have Lorelai, Sookie, Luke, and Rory, but it is a perfect example of what a B&B should strive to be. Great people, relaxation, beautiful setting, amazing food, and the ability to stay like a local is what the Crystal River Inn is all about.
